My article in WaPo: Some Seniors Are Thriving During the Pandemic

June 25, 2020. My latest article ran in the wellness section of the Washington Post today. The piece was a great opportunity to probe what I see as one of the prevailing covid-19 narratives: that older people are weak, defenseless, and wasting away in social isolation during the pandemic. In fact, many people in their 70s and beyond are highly functional and thinking creatively about how to maintain their fitness and friendships while staying safe. Their stories are instructive to other seniors who may see age as an excuse to let themselves "detrain," or fall out of shape. And the advice of athletes like DeEtte Sauer - who "ages fiercely" - provides younger people with a roadmap of the long-term benefits to be reaped if they take on a healthier lifestyle.
